Structural Division Expertise and Services

The Structural Division of SC Solutions has a staff of engineers with backgrounds in mechanics, civil and coastal marine structural engineering, cold regions/Arctic engineering, geotechnical engineering, and advanced numerical methods.

The Division provides expertise in linear and non-linear finite element and finite difference based analysis of structures and systems subjected to static and seismic/dynamic loads, seismic specification, frequency and time domain analysis, fatigue and fracture investigation, computational fluid dynamics, heat transfer studies and thermal design, material testing, and other laboratory investigations.

The Division undertakes specialty work in emerging technologies that often requires development of new and novel design, fabrication and construction concepts and their analytical or laboratory validation. The following activities performed for clients illustrate the Structural Division's capabilities:

  • Technology Development and Implementation: Division personnel designed a novel prismatic tank for LNG storage to be located in the seismically sensitive Gulf of Venice offshore Italy. Our engineers are now supporting fabrication, construction and regulatory body approval of the 125,000 m3 tank.

  • Technical Due Diligence, Check for Conformance to Codes, Standards & Global Practices: Division personnel perform technical due diligence to ensure that all technologies selected fulfilled functional requirements, and that all design, construction, operation, maintenance, budgets and schedules are at optimum levels. Our engineers develop and provide senior engineer level assistance in identifying design requirements, assisting with design basis, criteria, technical specifications, and design methods development, and their validation for conformance to established codes, standards and global practices. This development becomes the basis for solutions to special problems such as designing a storage vessel for partial fill application on a floating LNG terminal.

  • Analytical Validation of Complex Multi-Disciplinary Designs, Laboratory Investigations: Division personnel developed performance-based designs requiring knowledge of cryogenic engineering, materials selection, structural behavior under static and dynamic loads and state-of-the-art construction methods, and validated these designs using advanced computational methods. Division personnel also performed laboratory investigations to proof test designs and develop welding methods.

  • High-end Analysis of Complex Structural Systems: Division personnel perform analysis including linear and non-linear finite element based strength/stability analysis of steel and concrete structures subjected to static, dynamic or thermal shock loads, soil-structural and fluid-structure interactions, seismic specification and seismic design, analysis of structures, foundations and pipelines, computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer studies.

  • Cooperative Assistance and Teaming: Division personnel are available to assist in proposal and bid preparation and subsequent execution of client sponsored projects for activities requiring specialized skills. These activities may include concept development and structural design optimization, foundation selection and optimization, soil consolidation studies and numerical modeling and analysis of complex structural/pipeline systems subjected to seismic loading.
