Ras Laffan LNG Expansion Project
Storage Tank Design Check

The Ras Laffan onshore expansion project included the construction of a new LNG tank to increase additional LNG storage capacity. The owner, RasGas, made the decision to use the design of the tank adjacent to the site for the design for the new tank, while taking into account the unique geotechnical conditions of the area. SC Solutions-Berger/ABAM team were tasked by RasGas, Fluor and ExxonMobil to conduct an independent verification of the design to determine if the same design can be utilized, in light of the respective site geotechnical conditions, seismic hazard, and design criteria. To accomplish this goal, the following activities were carried out:
- Review the governing codes and standards,
- Evaluate the geotechnical information,
- Perform Site response analysis,
- Perform Soil Structure Interaction analysis (SSI),
- Provide Seismic analysis for both tanks.
SC Solutions compared the demands for both tanks, given their site-specific seismic ground motions and response characteristics, and make an assessment as to whether the existing tank design can, with a fair degree of confidence, be utilized for new tank.
