SC Solutions was chosen to conduct nonlinear analyses and optimization studies of the Lisbon Metro tunnels in preparation for an extension of the Lisbon Metro. SC Solutions’ task consisted of the optimization of the proposed concrete tunnel liner system for the extension. Nonlinear analysis techniques were employed to evaluate the true stress state of structural elements comprising the design. Finite element models of several proposed configurations were used to determine the most effective design. For each of these configurations, nonlinear analyses were conducted and the structural integrity was evaluated. Nonlinear effects simulated in these models included representation of geometric as well as material effects, such as nonlinear concrete and soil representations.
In a period of two months, over 30 different configurations of the concrete liner geometry were evaluated. Based on these analyses, an optimal design was developed and proposed to the city of Lisbon, and were awarded the contract for the final design and construction. Construction Sequence Analyses were used to verify the constructibility and validity of the proposed design.
