Joseph R. Smith

Joseph R. Smith has over 20 years of experience in aerodynamics, aerospace development, spacecraft, and top category motorsport.

Mr. Smith’s experience includes the design, analysis, test, and manufacture of spaceflight hardware (crewed and uncrewed), aircraft, and top-level racing cars. In aerospace he has worked as a senior project manager, design engineer, and as a senior structural analyst. The positions Mr. Smith has held in motorsport have spanned from aerodynamics designer to Head of Aerodynamics. He has years of experience in the aerodynamic development and testing of racing cars, both open and closed wheel.  He has worked on various teams, including Champ Car, F1 and NASCAR, and has thousands of hours of testing experience in both scale model and full-size testing.  Mr. Smith has special expertise in the design and tooling of composite parts, both laminated and compression molded short fiber.

Mr. Smith joined SC Solutions in 2021, as the Director, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.  Prior to SC Solutions Mr. Smith worked as a Project Manager for Quartus Engineering, as Head of Aerodynamics at Michael Waltrip Racing, and at ATK Space Systems as a Structural Analyst and Design Engineer.

Mr. Smith holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the California State Polytechnic University-Pomona.
